About Neerja
From leading advanced research at Hewlett Packard Labs, where I founded the Imaging Systems Lab, to guiding over 100 social entrepreneurs as a Senior Research Fellow at Stanford’s Digital Vision Program, I’ve worked at the intersection of technology and social impact.
In recent years, I’ve embraced my love for storytelling, authoring works such as Moments in Transition and The Chemistry of Belonging. These books explore themes of identity, belonging, and the human experience, inspired by my own personal and professional transitions.

MOMENTS IN TRANSITIONS: Stories of Maya and Jeena
In Moments in Transition, Neerja Raman beautifully captures the emotional nuances of cultural transitions and personal identity through two intertwined stories. Set against the backdrop of multicultural settings, the stories highlight the internal struggles and triumphs faced by individuals living in societies undergoing rapid change. Through Maya’s and Jeena’s experiences, Raman explores themes of identity, resilience, and the search for a sense of home. The narrative style is vivid and intimate, allowing readers to connect deeply with the characters and their emotional journeys.
Moments in Transition is not just a story about two women, it’s a reflection of the universal human experience of finding one’s place in an ever-evolving world.

Through vivid storytelling and heartfelt reflections, Raman paints a picture of the warmth, traditions, and familial bonds that shaped her early years. The house on East Canal Road becomes more than just a physical space, it symbolizes roots, identity, and the enduring connection to one’s heritage.
The book is a celebration of the places and moments that leave an indelible mark on our lives. It invites readers to reflect on their own sense of belonging, the memories tied to their childhood, and the cultural influences that shape who they are. Moments in Transition: Stories of Maya and Jeena
Can’t keep the book down
The book grabs your attention right from the opening paragraph. The story line flows smooth, though you do have be alert as the narrator differs in each chapter. It extols the relationship between a mother and daughter and would make a perfect Mother’s Day gift.

Snippets of life from three generations
Neerja has skilfully woven everyday happenings in the complex fabric that is three generations of a family. Each story. is a gem connecting the present with memories of a life lived fully.
Enlightenment through example
Neerja Raman tackles the questions of life – how to live it well, despite “transitions” which are always difficult. Her philosophy blends Indian and US American experiences. This turns the charm of Neerja’s collection of essays and short stories into a medley of worthwhile advice. By using fiction, Neerja is able to demonstrate how this advice can be used. I look forward to more tales of Maya and Jeena. We are missing more enlightenment from key moments and lessons learned.

The House on East Canal Road
You get hooked from the first chapter!
I loved reading this book because it took me back to the town where we grew up – Dehra Dun – from where you could always see the famous hill station of Mussorie to the North. Just 6 miles as the crow flies – nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas. Sun-soaked white houses by day, twinkling lights by night and snow capped peaks in winter. The romance of this setting was a constant. However, the many layers in the book take us through twists and turns in the story of a family in colonial times and of India’s struggles for freedom. The book hooks you from the first chapter and slowly reels you in to the end.
An Enjoyable Read
Neerja Raman’s slim novel (fewer than 200 pages) packs in a punch. It is the story of Kishan Chand, the kindly patriarch whose perfect domestic life comes to an abrupt end with the death of his beloved wife, Radha. Kishan Chand takes his familial obligations seriously, arranges marriages for his sons, gets caught up in India’s self-rule movement, is imprisoned briefly and emerges as a freedom fighter. The rest of the novel is peopled with Leela, Kishan Chand’s capable and loving daughter in law, his three sons and granddaughter Anita – all charting their own courses as their circumstances shift. It is also the story of pre-Independence India, and the struggles, both internal and external, that ordinary Indians experience. And, underlying all this, it is the story of Dehradun, the picturesque town with its canals and paddy fields and itself undergoing a transformation of it own under British rule.
Neerja Raman paints on a vast canvas and succeeds in providing her readers with an absorbing and entertaining story. Her description of Dehradun with its sights, smells and sounds, the fascinating characters each absorbed in forging his or her path in a turbulent India, and the steady pace of the narrative – all hold our attention to the end and make this a very worthwhile read.

Beautifully written
I’m not usually one for fiction, let alone anything with a touch of romance in it. But this was recommended by a friend and it seemed worth a read. In short, I loved it. It’s beautifully written, very enjoyable, and highly recommended.
